The El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the national forest system. At nearly 29,000 acres, it is one of the smallest in size, yet one of the most biologically diverse. Entry tickets for the main recreation area in El Yunque along Rd 191 are available by reservation at Recreation.gov. Visitor capacity to this area is being managed to help comply with health and safety directives. Following the health and safety guidelines of the agency and the current Governors Executive Order, forest visitors should use masks, practice social distancing, not gather in groups and remove trash from the Forest. Trails are open for exercise.
Most of the recreation facilities on the El Yunque National Forest are on Road 191 North in Rio Grande. The road and most of the recreation sites and trails were constructed during the 1940s by the Civil Conservation Corps. There are numerous trailheads, observation points, and historic sites along the Corridor.
